Using AI-Generated Descriptions
Let AI write compelling listing descriptions for you
12 min read · Updated 2 March 2026
Writing unique, engaging descriptions for every listing across multiple marketplaces is one of the most time-consuming parts of reselling. Evriwhere's AI description generator takes the work out of this process — it writes platform-optimised descriptions based on your item's details, saving you minutes per listing and helping you maintain a consistent, professional tone across all your shops.
How AI Descriptions Work
Evriwhere's AI doesn't generate descriptions in isolation. It uses the information you've already entered about your item to write relevant, accurate descriptions that reflect what you're actually selling.
What the AI Uses
When you generate a description, the AI considers the following details from your item:
- Item Name — The item name and any keywords you included.
- Category — What type of product it is (clothing, footwear, accessories, etc.).
- Brand — The brand name, if provided.
- Size — The size you selected.
- Colour — The colours you assigned.
- Condition — Whether the item is new with tags, new no tags, like new, good, used, or poor.
- Any existing description — If you wrote a partial description, the AI incorporates it.
- Your custom prompt — If you've set up a custom AI prompt in settings (more on this below), it guides the AI's tone and style.
The more complete your item details are, the better the AI description will be. An item with just a name will get a generic description, while an item with a full name, brand, category, size, condition, and colours will get a detailed, specific one.
Platform-Specific Descriptions
One of the most powerful aspects of Evriwhere's AI is that it tailors descriptions to each marketplace. The selling culture, audience expectations, and formatting norms differ between Depop, eBay, and Vinted, and the AI adapts accordingly:
Depop Descriptions
- Tone: Casual, trendy, and conversational. Depop's audience skews younger and expects a more relaxed, personality-driven description style.
- Hashtags: The AI includes up to 5 hashtags at the end of the description. Depop enforces a maximum of 5 hashtags per listing, and the AI respects this limit automatically.
- Length: Concise and punchy. Depop buyers tend to skim descriptions, so the AI keeps things brief while covering the essentials.
- Example style: "Gorgeous vintage Nike windbreaker in navy blue. Size M, fits true to size. Excellent condition — barely worn. Perfect for layering. #nike #vintage #windbreaker #streetwear #y2k"
eBay Descriptions
- Tone: More formal and detailed. eBay buyers expect comprehensive item descriptions with specific measurements, materials, and condition details.
- Hashtags: Not included. eBay doesn't use hashtags in the same way.
- Length: Longer and more thorough. The AI provides detailed information about the item's features, measurements, condition, and any relevant specifics.
- Example style: "Nike Windbreaker Jacket in Navy Blue, Size Medium. This jacket is in excellent pre-owned condition with minimal signs of wear. Features a full-zip front closure, elastic cuffs, and an adjustable drawstring hem. Lightweight and breathable, ideal for transitional weather. Please review all photos carefully before purchasing."
Vinted Descriptions
- Tone: Friendly and straightforward. Vinted's community is casual but expects honest, clear descriptions.
- Hashtags: The AI may include a few relevant hashtags where appropriate, following Vinted's conventions.
- Length: Moderate — more detailed than Depop but less formal than eBay.
- Example style: "Navy blue Nike windbreaker in size M. Barely worn, great condition with no flaws. Lightweight and perfect for spring/autumn. Happy to answer any questions! #nike #windbreaker"
One item, three descriptions
When you create listings on multiple platforms from the same inventory item, Evriwhere generates a unique description for each platform. You don't get the same generic text everywhere — each description is crafted for its specific marketplace audience.
Generating a Description
AI descriptions are generated when you're creating a listing from an inventory item, not when adding the item itself. The AI generates the description only — it does not generate or modify the listing title. Here's how the process works:
Open the Create Listing screen
From your Items tab, tap an item to open its detail view, then tap Create Listing (or the listing option for the marketplace you want to list on). This opens the Create Listing screen, which includes fields for the listing title, description, price, and platform-specific options.
Find the description field
On the Create Listing screen, scroll to the Description field. If you added a description when creating the inventory item, it will appear here as a starting point. If not, the field will be empty.
Tap the Generate button
Near the description field, you'll see a Generate button with a sparkles icon (✨). Tap it to trigger the AI. The button text changes to "Generating" while the AI writes your description. The app sends your item's details to the AI service, which writes a platform-appropriate description.
In many cases, the description may already be pre-generated — Evriwhere automatically starts generating a description in the background when you open an item's page, so it's often ready by the time you need it.
Wait for generation
A loading indicator appears while the AI writes your description. This typically takes 2–5 seconds. Once complete, the generated description appears in the description field.
Review and edit
Read through the generated description carefully. The AI does a good job, but you should always review the output and make any adjustments you see fit. You might want to:
- Add specific measurements that the AI didn't include.
- Mention a particular flaw or detail that's important for buyers to know.
- Adjust the tone to match your personal brand voice.
- Add or remove hashtags on Depop.
- Correct any inaccuracies (rare, but possible if the item details were incomplete).
Edit the text directly in the description field. Your changes are saved as part of the listing.
Always review AI output
AI-generated descriptions are a starting point, not a finished product. Always read through the description before publishing your listing. Make sure all details are accurate, especially condition information and any claims about the item. Incorrect descriptions can lead to buyer disputes.
Setting Up a Custom AI Prompt
The default AI style produces solid, platform-appropriate descriptions. But if you want to inject your own personality, include specific phrases, or control the tone more precisely, you can set up a custom AI prompt that guides how the AI writes all your descriptions.
Accessing AI Description Settings
Open Settings
Tap the Settings tab (or gear icon) in the app's navigation. This opens the main Settings screen.
Navigate to General
In the Settings menu, tap General to open general app settings.
Tap AI Description
Under the General settings, tap AI Description. This opens the AI Description settings screen where you can write and save your custom prompt.
Writing Your Custom Prompt
The AI Description settings screen has a text field where you can enter your custom instructions. This prompt is sent to the AI along with your item details every time you generate a description. Think of it as a set of standing instructions that tell the AI how you want your descriptions written.
Character Limit
Your custom prompt can be up to 512 characters long. A character counter at the bottom of the text field shows your current usage — for example, "460/512".
- The counter text changes colour as you approach the limit:
- Normal colour — You're well under the limit.
- Orange — You've used 90% or more of the available characters (461+ characters). Consider tightening your prompt.
- Red — You've reached the 512-character limit. You cannot type any more characters.
Example Custom Prompts
Here are some examples of effective custom prompts:
Shipping and service focused:
Start the description with: "Always shipped within 48 hours via Royal Mail tracked." End with: "Message me with any questions — happy to help!"
Hashtag and SEO focused:
Always add exactly 5 relevant hashtags at the end. Include the brand name, item type, and current trend keywords. Make descriptions SEO-friendly.
Casual and personality-driven:
Sound friendly, upbeat, and use emojis. Keep descriptions short and punchy. Mention that I'm happy to bundle items for a discount.
Professional and detail-oriented:
Write formal, detailed descriptions. Include material information if known. Mention condition clearly. Do not use slang or emojis. Always note that returns are accepted within 14 days.
Vintage seller focused:
Emphasise the vintage nature of items. Include the approximate era/decade. Mention any unique features or historical context. Use the phrase "true vintage" where applicable.
Keep it focused
The best custom prompts are specific and actionable. Instead of vague instructions like "write a good description", tell the AI exactly what you want: specific phrases to include, a particular tone, whether to use emojis, what information to emphasise, or how to structure the description.
Saving Your Prompt
After writing your custom prompt:
- Tap the Save button in the top-right corner of the screen.
- A success alert appears: "Your AI description preferences have been saved."
- Your prompt is now active and will guide all future AI-generated descriptions.
If the save fails (for example, due to a network issue), an error alert will appear. Try tapping Save again, or check your internet connection and retry.
Clearing Your Prompt
To return to the default AI behaviour, simply delete all text from the custom prompt field and tap Save. With an empty prompt, the AI reverts to its standard style for each platform.
Tips for Getting Better AI Descriptions
The quality of AI-generated descriptions depends heavily on the information you provide. Here are practical tips for getting the best results.
Fill in Complete Item Details
The AI uses your item's name, category, brand, size, colour, and condition to write descriptions. The more fields you fill in, the more specific and accurate the description will be.
- With minimal details (name only): "Great item in good condition. Check out the photos for more details."
- With full details (name, brand, category, size, colour, condition): "Nike Air Force 1 '07 trainers in white, size UK 9. In like new condition with no visible signs of wear — these have been well looked after. Classic silhouette that goes with everything."
The difference is stark. Always fill in as many item details as possible before generating a description.
Write Descriptive Item Names
Your item name is the single most important input for the AI. A descriptive name like "Vintage Levi's 501 High-Waisted Jeans Light Wash W28 L30" gives the AI far more to work with than a vague name like "Jeans".
Include in your item name:
- Brand name
- Item type
- Key attributes (colour, wash, style, cut)
- Size if space allows
Use Your Custom Prompt Strategically
Your custom prompt shapes every description the AI generates, so make it count. Think about what differentiates your shop and what information you always want included:
- Do you always ship next day? Tell the AI to mention it.
- Do you offer bundles? Include that instruction.
- Do you specialise in a niche (vintage, streetwear, designer)? Tell the AI to write with that context.
Edit and Personalise
AI descriptions are a time-saving starting point, not a replacement for your own knowledge of the item. After generating a description:
- Add any details the AI couldn't know (specific measurements, fabric feel, fit notes from personal experience).
- Remove anything that doesn't apply or sounds incorrect.
- Add your personal touch — buyers on platforms like Depop especially appreciate descriptions that feel personal rather than templated.
Don't blindly publish
Always read the AI-generated description before creating your listing. While the AI is generally accurate, it can occasionally make assumptions or include details that don't match your specific item. You are responsible for the accuracy of your listings on all marketplaces.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I generate a description without a custom prompt?
Yes. The custom prompt is entirely optional. Without one, the AI uses its default style, which produces solid descriptions tailored to each platform. The custom prompt simply lets you add your personal preferences on top of the defaults.
Does the AI write the same description every time?
No. Even for the same item, the AI generates slightly different descriptions each time you tap the generate button. If you're not happy with the first result, generate again for a fresh take.
Can I edit the description after generating?
Absolutely. The generated description appears in a standard text field that you can freely edit. Add, remove, or change anything you want before creating the listing.
Does AI description generation cost extra?
AI description generation is included with your Evriwhere plan. There are no per-description charges or separate credits for this feature.
Why does my Depop description only have 5 hashtags?
Depop enforces a maximum of 5 hashtags per listing. Evriwhere's AI automatically respects this limit when generating Depop descriptions. Using more than 5 hashtags on Depop can result in your listing being flagged or removed, so the AI keeps you within the rules.
Can I use AI descriptions for all three platforms at once?
When you create listings for multiple platforms from the same item, each platform gets its own independently generated description. You don't need to manually generate each one — Evriwhere handles this as part of the listing creation process.
