Using Background Removal

Remove and replace photo backgrounds automatically

Clean, distraction-free product photos are one of the easiest ways to make your listings look professional and stand out in search results. Evriwhere includes a built-in AI-powered background removal tool that automatically separates your product from its background and lets you replace it with a clean, consistent backdrop — no design skills required.

Why Background Removal Matters

When browsing marketplaces like Depop, eBay, and Vinted, buyers scroll through hundreds of listings. The ones that catch their eye tend to have:

  • Consistent, clean backgrounds that make the product the focal point.
  • Professional presentation that signals the seller takes their business seriously.
  • Clear subject separation so buyers can see exactly what they're getting.

Background removal transforms a messy bedroom photo into a polished, store-quality image. It's one of the most impactful things you can do to improve your sell-through rate.

Accessing Background Removal

Background removal is available in the photo editor, which you reach after taking or selecting photos for an item.

1

Open the photo editor

When adding or editing an item, take photos with the built-in camera or select photos from your library. After confirming your photo selection, you'll be taken to the Edit Photos screen — the photo editor.

2

Select the photo you want to edit

In the thumbnail carousel at the bottom of the editor, tap the photo you want to apply background removal to. The selected photo appears in the main preview area above.

3

Tap the Remove BG tool

In the toolbar at the bottom of the photo editor, tap the Remove BG tool. This opens a menu with two options:

  • Remove BG — Removes the background entirely, leaving the item on a transparent background.
  • Replace BG — Opens your device's photo library so you can select a new background image. The item's foreground is composited onto the background you choose.
4

Choose an option

Tap Remove BG to remove the background to transparent, or tap Replace BG to choose a custom background image from your photo library.

5

Wait for processing

A loading indicator appears while the AI processes your photo. This typically takes between 2 and 10 seconds depending on the complexity of the image and your internet connection. Once complete, the preview updates to show your product with the background removed or replaced.

6

Review and toggle

Check the result in the preview. When background removal is active, the Remove BG tool icon highlights to show it's toggled on. If you're happy with the result, you can move on to editing other photos. To undo the removal, tap Remove BG in the menu again to toggle it off and restore the original background.

Apply to multiple photos

You can apply background removal to each photo individually. Select a different photo in the thumbnail carousel and repeat the process. This lets you use different backgrounds for different shots, or keep some photos with their original background for variety.

How the AI Processing Works

Evriwhere uses a two-tier approach to background removal, designed to give you the best possible results while remaining reliable even without an internet connection.

Online Processing (Primary)

When you have an internet connection, Evriwhere sends your photo to its cloud-based AI service for processing. This service uses the BiRefNet model, a state-of-the-art bilateral reference network specifically designed for high-accuracy image segmentation.

  • Accuracy: Cloud processing delivers the highest quality results, with clean edges and accurate separation of complex items like lace, fur, jewellery, and items with thin or translucent elements.
  • Speed: Processing typically takes 2–5 seconds on a stable connection.
  • Privacy: Your photos are processed securely and are not stored on the server after processing is complete. They are used solely for the purpose of generating the background removal result.

On-Device Processing (Fallback)

If the online service is unavailable — for example, if you're offline, or if the server is temporarily unreachable — Evriwhere automatically falls back to on-device processing using Apple's Vision framework. This requires iOS 17 or later.

The on-device processing uses VNGenerateForegroundInstanceMaskRequest to detect and isolate the foreground product from the background. This works well for most items including clothing on flat surfaces, shoes, bags, and accessories.

On-device processing is GPU-accelerated for speed, meaning it runs on your device's graphics processor rather than the main CPU. This keeps the processing fast — typically 3–8 seconds — without making your device slow or unresponsive.

Quality comparison

Online processing generally produces better results, especially for complex items with fine details, translucent elements, or colours that blend with the background. On-device processing is very good for most common product photography scenarios but may struggle slightly with extremely complex edges. If you notice the on-device result isn't perfect, try retaking the photo against a more contrasting background.

Combining with Enhance

The photo editor's Enhance tool (a separate toolbar button) can be combined with background removal. You can apply both to the same photo — for example, remove the background and then enhance the image for better brightness and contrast. See Taking & Editing Product Photos for details on all the editor tools.

Tips for Best Results

Background removal works best when the AI can clearly distinguish your product from its surroundings. Here are some practical tips for getting the cleanest results.

Before You Shoot

  • Use a solid, contrasting background. Place your item on a surface or in front of a backdrop that's a different colour from the item itself. A white item on a white table will be harder for the AI to separate than a white item on a dark surface.
  • Ensure even lighting. Shadows — especially hard shadows cast by the item — can confuse the AI and create uneven edges. Soft, diffused lighting (like near a window with sheer curtains) produces the best results.
  • Keep the item clearly separated from the background. Avoid items partially hanging off surfaces, overlapping with other objects, or blending into the background. The clearer the boundary between item and background, the cleaner the removal.

During Editing

  • Check the edges. After background removal, zoom in on the preview and examine the edges of your product. Look for any areas where the background wasn't fully removed, or where parts of the product were accidentally trimmed.
  • Try Replace BG. If a transparent background doesn't suit your needs, use the Replace BG option to composite your item onto a background image from your photo library.
  • Use Enhance after background removal. Applying the Enhance tool after removing the background can help the product pop against its new backdrop.

Common Challenges

| Scenario | Solution | |----------|----------| | Fine details (lace, mesh, thin straps) get cut off | Retake the photo with the item against a strongly contrasting background | | Shadows around the item are left behind | Ensure lighting is soft and even; avoid direct overhead light | | Item edges look rough or jagged | Try online processing (ensure you have an internet connection) for smoother results | | Part of the item is removed | Make sure the full item is visible in the frame and doesn't blend with the background |

Complex items

Items with very complex outlines — such as items with fur trim, feathered accessories, or very thin jewellery chains — may require manual touch-up after background removal. For these items, consider photographing against a high-contrast backdrop (e.g., a bright item on a black surface) to give the AI the best chance at a clean separation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does background removal use my photo credits or cost extra?

Background removal is included with your Evriwhere plan at no additional cost. There are no per-photo charges or credit limits for background removal.

Can I use background removal on photos from my library?

Yes. Background removal works on any photo in the photo editor, whether it was taken with Evriwhere's built-in camera or imported from your photo library.

Does it work offline?

Partially. If you're offline, Evriwhere uses on-device processing (Apple Vision framework) as a fallback. Results are generally good but may not be as precise as online processing for complex items. For the best results, use background removal while connected to the internet.

Can I undo background removal?

Yes. Background removal is a toggle. Tap Remove BG again in the menu to toggle it off and restore the original background. Your original photo is preserved until you tap Done in the photo editor.

What happens to my original photo?

Your original photo is preserved until you confirm your edits by tapping Done. After that, the edited version (with the background replaced) is saved as part of the item. The original is not stored separately within Evriwhere after you confirm.
