Choosing Categories, Sizes & Brands
Select the right category, size, and brand for accurate listings
15 min read · Updated 2 March 2026
When adding items to your inventory in Evriwhere, choosing the right category, size, brand, colour, and condition is essential. These fields determine how your listings appear on Depop, eBay, and Vinted — they affect search visibility, filter accuracy, and ultimately whether the right buyers find your items. This guide walks you through each picker in detail so you know exactly how to use them.
Categories
The category you assign to an item tells marketplaces what kind of product it is. This affects which search filters apply, where the item appears in category browsing, and how the platform's algorithm surfaces it to potential buyers. Choosing the most specific and accurate category is one of the most important things you can do for listing visibility.
Opening the Category Picker
On the Add Item or Edit Item form, tap the Category field. This opens a full-screen category selection view.
How the Category Picker Works
The category picker is organised as a hierarchical list — categories flow from broad to specific, and you drill down through levels to find the most precise match for your item.
Browse or search
At the top of the category picker, there's a search bar. You have two options:
- Browse by scrolling through the list of top-level categories.
- Search by tapping the search bar and typing keywords. The list filters in real time as you type, showing only categories that match your search text. For example, typing "trainer" might show "Footwear > Trainers", "Kids > Footwear > Trainers", and similar results.
Searching is usually faster than browsing, especially if you already know roughly what category your item belongs to.
Check for suggestions
If you entered a name for your item before opening the category picker, Evriwhere analyses the name and displays suggested categories at the top of the list. These appear in a highlighted section labelled with a suggestion indicator. For example, if your item name is "Nike Air Max 90 Trainers", the picker might suggest "Footwear > Trainers" as a top suggestion.
Tap a suggestion to select it instantly, or ignore the suggestions and browse or search manually.
Drill down through levels
Tap a top-level category (for example, Clothing) to see its subcategories (for example, Tops, Bottoms, Outerwear, Dresses). Tap a subcategory to see further sub-subcategories if they exist. Continue tapping until you reach the most specific level available.
The goal is to select the most specific category possible. "Clothing > Tops > T-shirts" is better than just "Clothing > Tops" because it helps buyers who filter specifically for t-shirts find your item.
Confirm your selection
Once you tap a final category (one with no further subcategories), the picker closes and your selection appears on the Add Item form. The full category path is displayed so you can verify it's correct. For example: Clothing > Tops > T-shirts.
To change your selection, simply tap the Category field again to reopen the picker.
Category syncing
Evriwhere's category list is synchronised from the server to ensure it's always up to date with what each marketplace supports. The app includes retry logic — if a sync fails (for example, due to a brief network interruption), it automatically retries up to 5 times with increasing delays between attempts (exponential backoff). This means the category list is almost always available and current, even on unreliable connections.
Requesting a Missing Category
If you can't find a category that accurately describes your item, even after searching:
- Scroll to the bottom of the category picker.
- Tap Request Missing Category.
- Enter a description of the category you need.
- Submit your request.
The Evriwhere team reviews category requests and adds missing categories in app updates. In the meantime, choose the closest available category for your item.
Choose the closest match
If your exact category doesn't exist yet, pick the closest parent category. For example, if there's no specific "Dungarees" subcategory, selecting "Clothing > Bottoms" is better than leaving the field with a very broad category like just "Clothing". The more specific you can be, the better your listing will perform.
Sizes
Size information helps buyers filter for items that fit them. Evriwhere uses dynamic size grids that change based on the category you selected, ensuring you're always presented with the right size options for the type of item you're listing.
Opening the Size Picker
On the Add Item form, tap the Size field. This opens the size picker view.
How the Size Picker Works
The size picker adapts to your item's category. Here's what to expect for different types of items:
Clothing Sizes
For clothing categories (tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, etc.), the picker displays standard clothing sizes in a grid layout:
- XXS, XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL and beyond.
- Numerical sizes may also appear for certain categories (e.g., UK 6, 8, 10, 12, etc. for women's clothing).
- The available sizes differ for men's, women's, and kids' categories. For example, men's sizes may include "S, M, L, XL, XXL" while women's may include both letter sizes and numerical UK sizes.
Footwear Sizes
For shoe and trainer categories, the picker shows shoe-specific sizes:
- UK sizes (e.g., UK 3, UK 4, UK 4.5, UK 5, all the way up to UK 14 and beyond).
- Half sizes are included where applicable.
- Men's, women's, and kids' footwear have different size ranges and scales.
Kids' Sizes
For children's categories, sizes are typically based on age ranges or specific children's sizing standards:
- Newborn, 0–3 months, 3–6 months, 6–12 months, etc. for baby items.
- 2–3 years, 3–4 years, 4–5 years, etc. for toddler and young children's items.
- Standard children's numerical sizes for older kids' clothing and footwear.
Other Categories
For categories like watches, accessories, bags, and homewares, the size picker may show category-specific options (e.g., watch case diameter, bag dimensions) or may not appear at all if size isn't relevant.
Selecting a Size
- The sizes are displayed in a grid format for easy scanning.
- Tap the size that matches your item.
- Your selection is highlighted, and the picker closes, returning you to the Add Item form with the size filled in.
If your item doesn't have a standard size (for example, a one-size-fits-all scarf), you may be able to select a generic option like "One Size" or "Free Size", or you can leave the field blank.
Offline fallbacks
Size grids are loaded from Evriwhere's API to ensure they're always current. If you're offline, the app uses locally cached size data as a fallback so you can still select sizes without an internet connection. The cached data is updated every time you use the app while online.
Brands
Brand is one of the most influential factors in marketplace search and discoverability. Buyers frequently search by brand name, and branded items consistently sell for higher prices and faster than unbranded alternatives.
Opening the Brand Picker
On the Add Item form, tap the Brand field. This opens the brand selection view.
How the Brand Picker Works
View the brand list
The brand picker opens with a search bar at the top and a scrollable list of brands below. The brand list is loaded from Evriwhere's API and contains thousands of brands spanning fashion, streetwear, vintage, sportswear, luxury, high street, and more.
Search for your brand
Tap the search bar and start typing your brand name. The list filters in real time as you type, showing only brands that match your search text. For example, typing "Nik" would immediately show "Nike", "Niki", and any other brands starting with those letters. Continue typing to narrow the results.
Check for suggestions
If you entered a name for your item before opening the brand picker, Evriwhere analyses the name and may show a suggested brand at the top of the list. For example, if your item name includes "Adidas", the picker will suggest the Adidas brand at the top for quick selection.
Select your brand
Tap the brand name from the list to select it. The picker closes and the brand is filled in on the Add Item form.
Use a custom brand (if needed)
If your brand isn't in the list — for example, if it's a small independent label or a vintage brand that's no longer active — you can enter a custom brand name. Type the brand name into the search field. If no matches are found, an option appears to use your typed text as a custom brand. Tap it to use the custom name.
Brand accuracy matters
Always select the exact brand from the list if it's available, rather than typing a custom name. Using the standardised brand name ensures your listings are correctly categorised on marketplaces and appear when buyers filter by brand. For example, selecting "Levi's" from the list is better than typing "Levis" or "Levi Strauss" as a custom brand.
Colours
Colour is used by marketplace search filters and helps buyers find items in the specific colours they're looking for. Evriwhere lets you select up to 3 colours per item.
Opening the Colour Picker
On the Add Item form, tap the Colour field. This opens the colour selection view.
How the Colour Picker Works
View the colour grid
The colour picker displays all available colours in a 3-column grid. Each option shows a visual colour swatch (a small circle of the actual colour) next to the colour name. The available colours are:
Black, Brown, Grey, Beige, Pink, Purple, Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Orange, White, Silver, Gold, Khaki, Turquoise, Cream, Burgundy, Navy.
Note: The colour picker is hidden for certain item categories such as trading cards, books, and DVDs where colour isn't relevant.
Select your colours
Tap a colour to select it. A checkmark appears on the selected colour to confirm your choice. You can select up to 3 colours per item. If your item is a single solid colour, just select one. If it's multi-coloured (for example, a striped shirt or a tie-dye pattern), select the 2–3 most prominent colours.
Deselect a colour
If you change your mind, tap a selected colour again to deselect it. The checkmark will disappear.
Check for suggestions
If Evriwhere detected colour information from your item name, those colours will be pre-highlighted in the grid when the picker opens. For example, if your item name says "Red Nike Hoodie", the red swatch may already be selected. You can keep the suggestion or change it.
Confirm your selection
Tap Done to close the colour picker and return to the Add Item form. Your selected colours will be displayed in the Colour field.
Why 3 colours maximum?
Marketplaces typically support 1–2 colour selections per listing. Evriwhere allows up to 3 so you have flexibility when creating listings for different platforms. When you create a listing, Evriwhere maps your colour selections to the options available on each marketplace.
Condition
The condition field describes the current state of your item. This is a required field because all marketplaces require condition information, and it significantly affects buyer expectations and willingness to pay.
Condition Options
Evriwhere offers six condition levels. Here's what each one means and when to use it:
New with tags
The item is brand new and has never been worn or used. The original tags (price tags, brand tags, hang tags) are still attached. This is the highest condition level and commands the highest prices.
When to use: The item came directly from a retailer or wholesaler and still has all original tags. It has never been worn, washed, or altered in any way.
New no tags
The item is brand new and has never been worn or used, but the original tags have been removed. The item is in pristine condition with no signs of wear whatsoever.
When to use: The item was purchased new but the tags were removed (perhaps it was a gift, or you removed tags and then decided not to wear it). There must be absolutely no signs of wear.
Like New
The item has been barely used with no visible signs of wear. It looks and functions essentially like a new item.
When to use: The item was worn once or twice and shows no evidence of use. A buyer would be hard-pressed to tell it apart from a new item.
Good
The item has been used but is still in solid, presentable condition. There may be minor signs of wear such as slight fading, minor pilling, or small scuffs, but nothing that affects the item's overall appearance or functionality.
When to use: The item has been part of a regular wardrobe rotation but has been well cared for. It has some visible wear but no significant flaws.
Used
The item has been noticeably used with visible signs of wear. There may be fading, pilling, scuffs, minor stains, or other wear marks. Despite this, the item is still functional and wearable.
When to use: The item shows clear signs of regular use. It's still in acceptable condition for wearing but a buyer should expect visible wear. Always photograph and describe specific flaws when listing items in this condition.
Poor
The item has been heavily used with significant signs of wear, damage, or flaws. There may be noticeable stains, tears, holes, heavy pilling, or structural damage.
When to use: The item is still wearable or usable but is in rough condition. Price accordingly and be very thorough in documenting all flaws with photos and description.
Be honest about condition
Overstating an item's condition is one of the most common reasons for buyer disputes, returns, and negative reviews across all marketplaces. If you're unsure between two condition levels, it's always better to choose the lower one. Buyers appreciate honesty, and a pleasant surprise ("this looks better than expected!") is far preferable to a disappointed buyer.
How Auto-Suggestions Work
One of Evriwhere's most useful features is its ability to automatically detect categories, brands, colours, and more based on your item name. Here's how this works behind the scenes.
When you type in the Item Name field on the Add Item form, Evriwhere analyses the text in real time (with a brief delay for efficiency):
-
Category type suggestions: The app analyses your item name to detect the item type (Clothing, Footwear, or Other).
-
Gender detection: The app looks for gender indicators in your item name and pre-selects the appropriate gender option.
-
Condition detection: The app scans for condition-related words and pre-selects the matching condition level.
-
Brand suggestions: The app scans your item name for known brand names from its database. If it recognises a brand, it appears as a suggestion in the Brand field. This works for major brands (Nike, Adidas, Zara, etc.) as well as many smaller and vintage brands in the database.
-
Colour suggestions: The app looks for colour words in your item name (red, blue, black, etc.) and pre-selects matching colours in the colour picker.
-
Size suggestions: The app detects size references in your item name and can pre-select the matching size.
These suggestions appear automatically in the relevant fields. You're never forced to accept a suggestion — they're there purely to speed up your workflow. You can always change any auto-detected value manually.
Speed up your workflow
To take maximum advantage of auto-detection, write your item name first before filling in any other fields. Include the brand name, item type, colour, and any other relevant keywords. Evriwhere will pre-populate as many fields as it can, potentially saving you from having to manually open each picker.
Troubleshooting
Categories aren't loading
If the category picker shows an empty list or a loading spinner that doesn't resolve:
- Check your internet connection. Categories are synced from the server and require a network connection for the initial load.
- Wait a moment and try again. The app retries failed syncs up to 5 times automatically with exponential backoff. Close the picker and reopen it after a few seconds.
- Restart the app. Force-close Evriwhere and reopen it. This triggers a fresh sync attempt.
- Check for app updates. An outdated version of the app may have issues with category syncing. Update to the latest version from the App Store.
Sizes don't match my item's category
If the sizes shown in the picker don't seem right for your item (for example, showing shoe sizes for a clothing item), double-check that you've selected the correct category first. The size grid is determined by the category, so an incorrect category will show the wrong sizes. Change the category and then reopen the size picker.
My brand isn't in the list
If you can't find your brand in the brand picker, use the custom brand option by typing the brand name and selecting the option to use it as custom. Consider also spelling the brand differently or searching for alternative names the brand may be listed under.
